Introduction
The Great War was the first conflict that engulfed the world causing an estimated 16 million casualties including soldiers and civilians. It is one of the deadliest conflicts of all time, and it was one the first war where the concept of Total War was introduced. The two main sides were the Allies composed of Great Britian, France, Russia, and eventually Italy and the United States, and their opposers were the Central Powers consisting of Germany, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Ottoman Empire, and Bulgaria. The war began in 1914, but the United States joined in 1917 where some credit them to be the deciders of the war. They provided a surplus of reinforcements, a major moral boost to those who had been fighting for the previous three years, and a strong political leader who participated a great deal in the negotiations of the Treaty of Versailles.
